Segureño
The name of this breed is derived from the mountains around the Segura River, where it originated and its main centre of production. The Segureña, which is characterised by its sexual precociousness, prolificacy, hardiness and perfect adaptation to its environment - areas with little pasture and chalky soil that for the most part have no cover - is one of the most important breeds of sheep in Spain due to its large numbers, as it provides an income for a large number of farmers, shepherds and landowners. It is found in the provinces of Granada, Jaén, Almería, Murcia and Albacete, an area that corresponds to the mountains of Segura and las Villas, Cazorla, la Sagra, Orce, María and las Sierras de Baza, de los Filabres and de Castril. In general, the Segureña is bred in family herds that are consistent with extensive - semi-extensive farming and is bred using a variety of methods (trashumance, trasterminance and on ranches), and graze all year round. This breed is used mainly for meat production, producing lambs that are renowned for their excellent quality.
